The Most important raw material for the production of Bamboo Mat Moulded Skin (BMMS) is woven Bamboo mats. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant which is suitable for plantation and also occurs naturally in forest. Bamboo mats are excellent raw material for the manufacture of skin board. The BMMS is both environment and people friendly. Doors with bamboo mat skin boards are developed for the first time in the country. Hollow core doors are otherwise made from high density fibre board (HDF). The mechanical properties of bamboo mat skin board are far superior to High Density Fibre Board (HDF.)

It was observed that the hollow core door made with bamboo mat moulded skin conformed to the performance requirements as specified in IS-15380. The trials taken for overlaying the door with PVC foil in a membrane press was also found to be satisfactory for imparting wood like appearance.

The present practice of making hollow core doors in the country using moulded skin boards made out of high density fibre board which were imported, could be replaced to some extent with bamboo mat moulded skin.

The BMMSD has better mechanical properties and flexibility compared to HDF which are more brittle and has low resistance to impact load and susceptible to breakage.
