Channapatna Toys
Channapatna toys are world famous, the entire toy making industry is small scale done by the skilled Artisans. These toys are made using Wood and Vegetable dyes. This traditional craft of artisans of Channapatna making wooden toys involved the lacquering the wood of the Wrightia tinctoria tree, colloquially called Aale mara. Other woods like rubber, sycamore, cedar, pine and teak are used as well in addition to the traditional ivory-wood for making wooden toys. More than 6,000 people in Channapatna, working in 254 home manufacturing units and 50 small factories, were engaged in the making of these toys. During the production of toy, one end of the belt drive convert vertical motion into circular motion, creating designs. While creating designs lot of dust particle are formed. These dust/particles create problem for the disposal and environmental problems.
This dust is again can be a potential source of raw material for handicraftsman .It can be a raw material for making trays of household designed articles. IPIRTI has developed a very simple and fool proof technology for the production of moulded tray and flat board for small scale or cottage industry. The idea of converting this waste coupled with easy processing technology has made the way to develop the useful innovative product. To dessiminate the technology, the training programme are also been conducted for the artisans from channapatna.
These products at the mass production will not only solves the problem of disposal but also gives the artisans a solution for their wood waste to be used to give designer products with a cost within everyone’s reach.
